What is an infrared sensor?

Infrared sensors, also known as pyrometers, measure the infrared radiation coming off a surface. By measuring infrared rays, we can deduce the physical quantity of temperature. The measurement values from the sensor are converted into a readable analogue or digital signal that can be displayed.

Infrared sensor applications

Pedak offers a wide range of Optris infrared sensors. Optris makes sensors that are highly suited to use in areas such as the food industry. The Compact series, for example, has specially designed small-format sensor heads, which makes them easy to use in restricted and cramped spaces. They are used in ovens, dryers or small appliances etc.

The Compact series of infrared sensors also offers advantages when installed in applications with high ambient temperatures, e.g. in the metal or glass industries. Their robust and ambitious design allows the sensor heads to be used at temperatures of up to 250°C without additional cooling. This helps reduce the cost of mechanical plant.

If precise measurements and a visible measuring spot are required, then the High-Performance series is the answer. This series is larger and even more robust than the Compact series. The infrared sensors in the High-Performance series feature an innovative double laser sight. Unlike many infrared thermometers that only have a single laser and just mark the centre point but not the size of the measurement spot, the two laser points follow the optical infrared path to accurately mark the size and location of the measuring field from any distance. This greatly helps prevent any measurement errors.
