What is a character display?

Character displays are basic. They consist of a certain number of alphanumeric characters displayed on a given number of lines. The size of the display determines how many characters, lines and sizes are possible.

Character displays are available in a range of colours, with or without backlighting, and with an extensive selection of standard fonts.

If you prefer to be able to see more than just characters, you can choose a graphic display. Go to graphic displays for more information. If you have a display with an RS-232 connection, that’s not a problem because we also have RS-232 compatible displays.

Character display applications

The character display is most commonly used in mobile devices such as handheld meters. They are also in simple telephones, communication, measuring and testing equipment, and are often found in low-power mobile devices.

Application in equipment with alphanumeric displays; simple display.

A few examples of applications:

  • Ovens; for time or temperature
  • Intercoms; with name and house number
  • handheld meters; for displaying magnitudes

Which character display do I need?

We have several different versions of character displays; LCD, LED and OLED. To find out which form of display best the customer’s needs, we look at what has to be shown, the environment and the customer’s expectations of the display. Which factors are important – the ambient temperature, the number of characters displayed or the display’s visibility? All of these aspects are taken into account when determining which display is suitable.
