Milesight SG50 Solar LoRaWAN® Gateway
The Milesight SG50 is an ultra-low-power outdoor LoRaWAN® gateway for locations without access to mains power or a fixed internet connection. The gateway combines solar power, an integrated backup battery and cellular 4G connectivity. This enables you to establish a reliable LoRaWAN® network even in remote areas.
With eight LoRaWAN® channels, a robust IP67 enclosure and an operating temperature range of -30 to +70 °C, the SG50 is designed for long-term outdoor use. Typical applications include agriculture, horticulture, water management, environmental monitoring, infrastructure and temporary measurement projects.
Independent of mains power and wired internet
The SG50 is normally powered by a solar panel. Milesight recommends a standard 30 W solar panel, with an optional 45 W version available. The panel powers the gateway while simultaneously charging its internal 25 Ah battery.
When insufficient sunlight is available, the battery can support typical operation for up to four days. This specification is based on a network of one hundred sensor nodes reporting every ten minutes.
Where a fixed power source is available, the SG50 can also be powered by 12–24 V DC through its M12 connector. USB-C can be used for power and local console access.
Ultra-low-power design
With a typical power consumption of only 0.8 W, the SG50 is optimised for autonomous solar-powered applications.
An integrated packet filter removes invalid LoRaWAN® packets, reducing unnecessary data traffic, cellular usage and energy consumption. The gateway can automatically disable Wi-Fi when little solar power is available and reactivate it when the battery is charging.
The charging current is dynamically adjusted according to battery temperature. At low temperatures, the battery can be heated to maintain normal operation.
Cellular 4G backhaul
The SG50 forwards received LoRaWAN® data via 4G LTE Cat 1 or GSM to the selected network or cloud platform. This eliminates the need for a wired internet connection.
The gateway includes a nano-SIM slot and a shared external antenna for cellular communication and GPS. GPS allows the location of the gateway to be determined.
Wi-Fi is intended exclusively for local configuration and provides an approximate range of 10 to 15 metres.
Capacity for extensive LoRaWAN® networks
As an eight-channel packet forwarder, the gateway can support approximately 2,000 LoRaWAN® Class A, B and C devices. Actual capacity depends on factors such as uplink and downlink traffic and the configured reporting intervals.
The SG50 also has an embedded LoRaWAN® network server supporting up to one hundred devices. This means the gateway can independently manage a local LoRaWAN® network. Data can then be forwarded to an external platform or custom application via MQTT.
Broad compatibility and easy integration
The SG50 supports widely used network servers and protocols, including:
- Semtech UDP Packet Forwarder
- LoRa Basics™ Station
- ChirpStack v3 and v4
- Milesight Embedded Network Server
- Milesight DeviceHub
- Milesight Development Platform
- MQTT
- HTTP and HTTPS
- OpenVPN Client
This makes it possible to use the gateway with existing LoRaWAN® infrastructures or custom IoT solutions.
Reliable data transmission
The gateway supports data retransmission. If the cellular connection is temporarily unavailable, data can be retransmitted once the connection has been restored.
Listen Before Talk helps reduce conflicts on LoRaWAN® channels. The gateway checks whether a channel is available before transmitting a message.
An integrated watchdog and timer monitor gateway operation and help improve availability.
Remote configuration and management
The SG50 can be configured and managed through:
- A local web interface
- Milesight Development Platform
- Milesight DeviceHub
- MQTT API
Support for automatic provisioning allows predefined configuration templates to be applied when the gateway is first activated. This simplifies the deployment of multiple gateways across different locations.
Robust outdoor enclosure
The cast-aluminium enclosure has an IP67 protection rating and protects the electronics against dust and weather conditions. The SG50 operates at temperatures from -30 to +70 °C and can be installed on a wall or pole.
